Dr Sanem Acikalin Cartigny
Newcastle UniversityDr Sanem Acikalin Cartigny is a Senior Lecturer in Geology at Newcastle University. Her research explores deep-sea sedimentary processes and their role in transporting and burying organic carbon, pore scale evolution after deposition and organic matter influence on clay coat formation. Combining sedimentology, marine geoscience and geochemistry, she investigates submarine landslides, turbidity currents and the movement of sediment and carbon from continental margins into the deep ocean. Her work examines how these processes respond to environmental and climatic change, with implications for natural carbon cycling and marine hazards.
She holds a BSc in Geological Engineering from Hacettepe University and completed her MSc and PhD studies at Osmangazi University, focusing on sedimentary basin evolution in Turkey. More recently, she has extended her research to sustainable subsurface resources, including geothermal systems and geological hydrogen.

Dr Amanda Owen
University of GlasgowDr Amanda Owen is a Senior Lecturer in Sedimentology at the University of Glasgow. Her research investigates how sediment moves across landscapes and is stored within alluvial, fluvial and deltaic systems. Working across modern and ancient environments, she explores how processes operating from seconds to geological timescales shape sedimentary deposits and their predictability.
She combines remote sensing, AI, field sedimentology, geomorphology and computational modelling to address scientific questions and societal challenges. Her work includes quantitative models of sedimentary systems, from basin to pore scale, with applications to subsurface resources and potential storage sites. She also studies how climate, tectonics and human activity influence sedimentary systems, alongside interests in lithification pathways and sedimentary–volcano interactions. Before joining Glasgow in 2017, she held a postdoctoral position at the University of Aberdeen and completed a PhD in Fluvial Sedimentology at Royal Holloway, University of London.

Dr Edoardo Sanità
Università degli Studi “G. d’Annunzio” Chieti – PescaraDr Edoardo Sanità is a structural geologist whose research examines the deformation and metamorphism of low-grade rocks in the Northern Apennines, Western Alps and Alpine Corsica. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, he investigates the sedimentary, structural and tectonic histories of geological units incorporated into mountain belts, including the Tuscan Nappe and the Helminthoid Flysch and Briançonnais units.
His work combines field observations with thermodynamic modelling to reconstruct the pressure and temperature conditions experienced by rocks ranging from blueschists to greenschists. He uses both forward modelling through pseudosections and inverse modelling through multiequilibrium thermobarometry. He is also developing approaches to obtain high-quality chemical data from submicrometre metamorphic minerals using transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (TEM-EDS).
